Let’s go back to our previous blog, i.e. Blog No. 17, in which we asked ourselves a few, possibly, disturbing questions. Let’s cite them here for an easy reference:
(i) What is the infrastructure, including the quality of the faculty, of the Engineering Institutions?
(ii) What percentage of our engineering students are lost to other jobs / other countries?
(iii) Do the current modes of engagement between the industry and the Institutions are adequate to ensure that they are able to leverage each other?
(iv) What is the quality of the students who pass out and the quality of jobs that “the few fortunate of them” land at?
What do we seem to have as answers to the above questions?
(i) The infrastructure, including the quality of the faculty, of the Engineering Institutions has a very broad spectrum – from being one of the best anywhere to pathetic, to say the least.
(ii) While it will take a good amount of effort to get a correct answer, we know that it’s a good percent, and is a direct loss in terms of the work-force to contribute to our objective.
(iii) The current scenario can be very well described as the pass-outs from the Engineering Institutions requiring heavy makeover to fit into the industry framework, to the workforce in the industry losing complete touch with the basics and often getting stuck to set procedures without an ability to strive for innovation (worth the name!) till being gradually promoted to dysfunctional non-Engineering Managers’ roles!
(iv) A good percent of the pass-outs either struggle to get a job or get into a job in which they need considerable time even to figure out what they are doing in relation to what they were taught and / or what, in the first place, got them into Engineering “years before”!
There is a need for a CHANGE – now, must, and for the good! We can be better! Things can be better! The real need is to be conscious of the need for a CHANGE…We’ll work it out!
Let’s look for ways and means to effect the CHANGE…
