Dear Friend,

In our previous blog, Blog No. 36, we discussed the sixth action item for the Panel of Experts from Industry & Academia (listed in our Blog No. 29, dated as 29th October 2014) – to initiate and oversee Technical Developments for meeting “below-the-horizon” requirements.

Let’s think together on the seventh action item today – to create an awareness that for Engineering Business “Engineering” is most important and business growth would require an atmosphere of learning, sharing, and exploration.

Does the above appear as a trivial proposition?

Let’s review the current Engineering Business Scenario. Here are our few key observations:

(i)                  The major support activities are: (i) Project support (ii) Training support (iii) Resource support.

(ii)                The technical expertise development is generally driven by available requirements, resulting in a general absence of long-term technical expertise development plans.

(iii)               Professional careers of resources are at the mercy of available requirements.

The final outcome is a framework which rests more on business prospects available rather than an inherent strength to “develop  expertise and demand requirements”…not in line with the goal that we have set for ourselves!

…and hence, our proposition – Let Engineering happen in the way that it should happen, i.e. in the spirit of learning, sharing, and exploration. In the process, the support organizations will develop the muscles to support more and more…

There are a few support organizations today which understand the wisdom of this proposition, and are already on a right path. The need is to reinforce it further for them, and convey the message “loud and clear” to those who are yet to realize the wisdom of this proposition.

Please share your thoughts – We’ll wait for them as usual…

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend,

In our previous blog, Blog No. 35, we discussed the fifth action item for the Panel of Experts from Industry & Academia (listed in our Blog No. 29, dated as 29th October 2014) – to initiate and oversee Technical Developments for meeting “below-the-horizon” requirements.

Let’s think together on the sixth action item today – to create forums and platforms for Academia and Industry to share learning.

Let’s review for a while the current scenario of knowledge-sharing between Academia and Industry. Few of the current modes of knowledge-sharing are:

(i)                  Technical details published

(ii)                Seminars, and workshops

(iii)               Academia and Industry joint reviews (e.g. for some of the Aerospace Programs in our country)

(iv)              Folks in Academia moving to Industry (and vice versa) as a career shift

Are the above enough? Are both Academia and Industry aware of the technical achievements of each other on a real-time basis?

No – We feel – due to various reasons, including the inadequacy of the current modes of knowledge-sharing!

We mean to set up formal forums and platforms…for both you and us are here with a purpose, and hence we would not take things for granted. The knowledge that gets generated at both Academia and Industry on a regular basis must to available for each for the purpose that we have – the purpose of getting ahead as a country in contributing to the Global Engineering Requirements.

Please share your thoughts – We’ll wait for them as usual…

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend,

Happy New Year!

Please refer to our previous blog, Blog No. 34, in which we mentioned few of the great opportunities that are likely to unravel themselves in 2015. Let’s remember that a great opportunity is like a catch in the game of cricket…It helps only if a player takes it!

Yes, we need to grab all the great opportunities in the year 2015… We are already on the track of preparing ourselves for them…we believe!

In our previous blog, Blog No. 34, we discussed the fourth action item (listed in our Blog No. 29, dated as 29th October 2014) – to set up a process for periodic training of faculty apart from entry-level training.

Let’s think together on the fifth action item today – to initiate and oversee Technical Developments for meeting “below-the-horizon” requirements.

We see up to the horizon. But then there are things that exist “below the horizon”, waiting to catch our attention as we move forward.

We believe, we are moving forward…towards things that are not visible at this moment…

Let us question ourselves – Why do we need to initiate and oversee Technical Developments “now”? Well, the things that lie “below the horizon” could be of two categories – (i) that we can handle at our current expertise level (ii) that will require us to build up certain new expertise. We need to initiate and oversee Technical Developments for (ii).

There is an immediate challenge, though – How to know of things “below the horizon”? It will require us to be in constant touch with the originators of the requirements, i.e. OEMS – to be in sync with the new requirements / challenges that they see for themselves! We could also look for such requirements / challenges proactively by analyzing the shortcomings of what they offer now, as well as studying trends in market requirements.

Each new Technical Development initiative needs to be taken up in a planned way – much like a Project – looking for as much clarity as possible on what-to-do, how-to-do, and who-to-do – and, of course, with a dare-devil attitude to be motivated by the thrill of a success without being bogged down by the difficulties that may crop up as go along..

Please share your thoughts – We’ll wait for them as usual…
