Dear Friend,

We are back fresh after the Diwali celebrations last week. Diwali is the “festival of lights” interestingly celebrated on a new moon day which indicates the end of the dark fortnight… Let the celebrations continue to mark our determination to “get more and more light” into engineering!

In our previous blog, i.e. Blog No. 28, we had proposed to simplify the Action Items to a list of “few” items “knowing well their synergy when acted upon together”. Let’s do it. Interestingly we have just one Action Item – Creating of a panel of experts from Industry & Academia, who in turn will do the following:

(i) to review the curriculum periodically, say once in 2 years, to get rid of “not required”, and introduce “which must be there”.

(ii) to meet periodically, say annually, to leverage the database of the strengths of the Engineering Institutions.

(iii) to gather inputs periodically to update their curriculum to enhance the career prospects of the pass-outs.

(iv) to set up a process for periodic training of faculty apart from entry-level training.

(v) to initiate and oversee Technical Developments for meeting “below-the-horizon” requirements.

(vi) to create forums and platforms for Academia and Industry to share learning.

(vii) to create an awareness that for Engineering Business “Engineering” is most important and business growth would require an atmosphere of learning, sharing, and exploration.

(viii) to create a database of the “fountains of inspiration” and facilitate leveraging.

(ix) to create panels of experts in various domains with membership from both Academia and Industry to leverage their expertise as well as periodically review the ecosystem status, and share input on what need to be sustained and what to be initiated.

(x) to create forums and platforms for encouraging all the elements of the ecosystem to meet and interact periodically.

Do we need the panel to have any other action items to address? Please share your thoughts.

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend,

Please refer our previous blog, i.e. Blog No. 27, in which we proposed to get into a phase of identifying well-defined action items. Let’s derive the actions from the measures listed in the previous blog.

Aspect

Measure

Action Item

Enabling Engineering Education to Serve Industry Better Periodic review of the curriculum to get rid of “not required”, and introduce “which must be there” Creating of a panel of experts from Industry & Academia to review the curriculum periodically, say, once in 2 years
Creating an engineering education system consisting of faculty sound in basics and passionate about engineering themselves, and contents which would equip the students to be more than ready for the professional challenges and expectations Along with the above, setting up a mechanism of periodic training of faculty apart from entry level training
Creating low-cost easy access to the resources for “everyone” supported by a periodically-updated database of strengths of the Engineering Institutes (i) Creating a database of Engineering Institutes which would include description of the strengths of each
(ii) Creating a panel of Heads of the Institutions to meet periodically, say, annually to leverage the above database
Academia working with Industry to gather inputs periodically to update their curriculum to enhance the career prospects of the pass-outs Leveraging the panel of experts from Industry & Academia
Enhancing Academia & Industry Relation for Mutual Strengthening Industry working with Academia on Technical Developments for meeting “below-the-horizon” requirements Leveraging the panel of experts from Industry & Academia
Creating forums and platforms for Academia and Industry to share learning Regular meetings of the folks from Academia and Industry
Getting Engineering into Engineering Business Creating an awareness that for Engineering Business “Engineering” is most important and business growth would require an atmosphere of learning, sharing, and exploration Inculcating confidence in the Business Heads by demonstration of the benefits, with preparation and sharing of a database of the benefits
Building up, Nurturing, and making Expertise accessible to “ALL” Leveraging the “fountains of inspiration” available “wherever” (i) Creating a database of the “fountains of inspiration”
(ii) Leveraging the panel of experts from Industry & Academia to facilitate
Creating panels of experts in various domains with membership from both Academia and Industry for leveraging their expertise as well as periodically reviewing the ecosystem status, and share input on what need to be sustained and what to be initiated Leveraging the panel of experts from Industry & Academia
Creating forums and platforms for encouraging all the elements of the ecosystem to meet and interact periodically Regular meetings of the elements of the ecosystem

Our brains typically are not at ease with having to handle too many details at a given point of time…Hence we’ll simplify the Action Items to a list of “few” items knowing well their synergy when acted upon together…

Any suggestions, words of advice…?  We are into a great mission, together…you know!

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend,

We have shared a lot…our observations on the current status, possible ways and means to improve the status, etc. We need to move towards initiating actions which would enable us to meet our objective (You know!). For now, let us consolidate what we see as the aspects to work on, and the measures which need to be initiated:

Aspect

Measure

Enabling Engineering Education to Serve Industry Better (i) Periodic review of the curriculum to get rid of “not required”, and introduce “which must be there”.
(ii) Creating an engineering education system consisting of faculty sound in basics and passionate about engineering themselves, and contents which would equip the students to be more than ready for the professional challenges and expectations.
(iii) Creating low-cost easy access to the resources for “everyone” supported by a periodically-updated database of strengths of the Engineering Institutes.
(iv) Academia working with Industry to gather inputs periodically to update their curriculum to enhance the career prospects of the pass-outs.
Enhancing Academia & Industry Relation for Mutual Strengthening (i) Industry working with Academia on Technical Developments for meeting “below-the-horizon” requirements.
(ii) Creating forums and platforms for Academia and Industry to share learning.
Getting Engineering into Engineering Business Creating an awareness that for Engineering Business “Engineering” is most important and business growth would require an atmosphere of learning, sharing, and exploration.
Building up, Nurturing, and making Expertise accessible to “ALL” (i) Leveraging the “fountains of inspiration” available “wherever”
(ii) Creating panels of experts in various domains with membership from both Academia and Industry for leveraging their expertise as well as periodically reviewing the ecosystem status, and share input on what need to be sustained and what to be initiated.
(iii) Creating forums and platforms for encouraging all the elements of the ecosystem to meet and interact periodically.

Starting with the next blog, we would work on identifying well-defined action items…

We continue to be keen to receive your input…as usual!

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend,

This is Navaratri week – Navaratri represents the celebration of the Goddess of Power, Shakti! Also, today, 2nd October, is the birthday of Gandhiji – a life which baffled unarguably the best brain of modern times, Einstein, to “helplessly” say that “”Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth.”

We are at the onset of an unprecedented revolution in Engineering – which, we believe, will change the way Engineering is executed…

Let’s go back to our previous blog, i.e. Blog No. 25, in which we looked into some of the key reasons for “a-not-so-fulfilling career” in Engineering and the effects thereof. Let’s remember that a human brain gives its all to that which provides it the fulfillment which “enables it look for nothing beyond”!

Like in the case of enduring love, it is not enough it initiate the bonding. The bonding needs be sustained, nay, strengthened with the passage of time through “mutual love and care” to the point of being “made for each other”!

How to accomplish the above “MAGIC” in the case of Engineering?  Let’s look at a few enablers:

(i)                  Let’s review the engineering curriculum critically, get rid of the “not required”, and introduce “which must be there”.

(ii)                Let’s review how engineering is taught along with reviewing the need for upgrading faculty.

(iii)               Let’s create an awareness that for Engineering Business “Engineering” is most important, and business growth would require an atmosphere of learning, sharing, and exploration for sure.

Acting on the above will get us closer to being able to support “anything and everything”, which, in turn, will help strengthen the bonding between “Engineering” and its “Esteemed Practitioners” – you and us – towards a lifetime of “Happy” engineering…

Let’s commit ourselves to initiating a revolution – bigger than ever before!

Respectfully yours,
