Dear Friend

Let’s go back to our Blog No. 4 – “Engineering Outsourcing Business in India-4” – in which we hinted at retired very senior folks – some of whom may be lost “unnoticed”. Let’s be conscious of that these folks are highly capable with almost a life-time of chiseling, learning how to cope with challenges “seemingly” bigger than them, and proving them otherwise most of the times!

How to have them active and contributing fabulously to the end that we have in our hearts and minds?

  • We need to ensure that they lead charged-up lives with a deep sense of professional satisfaction with their energy levels kept intact (and not looking forward to hopefully peaceful retired lives at least without the day-to-day grudges of otherwise professional lives!)
  • We need to set up an ecosystem looking forward to the best of engineering challenges, rendering itself hungrier for the guidance and mentoring of its senior “fountains” of inspiration.

Yes, they would tell the youngsters about their failures without forgetting to share what should have been done to avoid them, probably for sure, how wisdom of perseverance “moves mountains”, and much more!

…Should we think of something more? We would prefer to listen to you now…

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend

Happy to be at the first double-digit blog – “Engineering Outsourcing Business in India-10”! Guess, we have already reviewed key show-stoppers as well as a few “ultra-powerful” key changes which will turn things around, and are potentially capable of putting us, as a country, on the path that we wish to be on…

Let’s look at again the factors which would enable us to create a super-charged ecosystem:

(i)                  Charging up the engineering education system with “great teachers” who will inspire others, with the process of inspiration going on and on

(ii)                Catalyzed by the above, creating a support system – both capable and committed – attracting the most challenging assignments from every corner of the world straightening the path for business leaders and engineers – providing them stable perspective, adequate reasons for sticking to engineering, and facilitating the growth of the ecosystem as they are blessed with their own growth.

Is it difficult? – Stephen R Covey says in his much-celebrated book “THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE”, “Habit 2 is based on imagination–the ability to envision in your mind what you cannot at present see with your eyes. It is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There is a mental (first) creation, and a physical (second) creation.

To us, it looks pretty simple (since “mental creation is well over”) – with the joy of going through the change process far more encouraging than all the difficulties that both you and we can think of may make us feel as required to keep us going!

Let’s keep discussing…Let blog 10 be a beginning of much more intense discussion on how we should welcome our future – the future of engineering in our country!

Respectfully yours,

19th June

Dear Friend

Please refer to our blog on the 15th June when we talked about creating an ecosystem in our country which will attract and support the biggest engineering challenges from all corners of the world. Let’s be conscious of its significance w.r.t. the business performance of the organizations into engineering, professional stickiness (when being satisfied both with life-long great learning and earning) of the engineers, and our vision of enabling our country to be the lead in engineering.

Now – how to make it happen? What it would take are:

(i)                  A super-charged ecosystem consisting of both capable and committed engineering fraternity

(ii)                Organizations ready to invest in building up infrastructure as required with a vision sustained by business success

Considering that business success and being able to attract the biggest engineering challenges is a proverbial chicken-and-egg story, the super-charged ecosystem needs to take a lead and “make it happen for sure”…

We have looked at a few key factors which will create such a super-charged ecosystem. How to do it better? We need your advice, ideas, and suggestions…Please share…We are ready to mix our sweat with yours in this endeavor!

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend

Please refer to our blog on the 17th June regarding why it is difficult to have great teachers in plenty spread over all the engineering institutions in our country – teachers who can create an engineering giant of every engineering pass out!

Let’s look at a few key characteristics of such a great teacher:

(i)                  Being sound in basics, a characteristic as a result of being thorough, enthusiastic, and with a sense of purpose

(ii)                Being passionate about engineering, a characteristic as result of having a personal vision

(iii)               Being concerned about identifying the best in a student, and initiating him / her on a life-long journey of complete personal unfolding.

Interestingly in our lives, inspiration in majority of instances is generally induced, rather than being originally created. Please refer again the vision of having a super-charged engineering environment everywhere that we talked about in our blog on the 17th June. We need to identify the “lamps” which can light other “lamps”, which in turn can light many others, and it should go on and on. This, when fueled by the best engineering assignments from every part of the world ensuring professional satisfaction, will be a course of eternity!

Do you agree?

Dear Friend

Please refer to our blog on the 15th June regarding engineering in our country failing to hold all to itself here. As a solution to this problem, we need to strengthen the engineering ecosystem and improve the engineering education system.

Let’s reflect upon another issue which comes in our way – Lack of the competent faculty to “seed” right basics and attitude.

How do we feel privileged to have been “influenced” by “a great teacher” in our life? It becomes a life-long inspiration and a guiding source of light whenever we feel, in some way lost, as we proceed on our journey of life. Again, do we not subscribe to how we love a subject in our student days if there happens to be such “a great teacher” teaching us that subject? When such a teacher instills certain basics or a key facet of “desired” attitude, it becomes an indelible impression. This is how a great personality takes shape in a domain of human activities, and engineering is no exception!

Now, why is it difficult to have such great teachers in plenty spread over all the engineering institutions in our country?

Let’s ponder over it deeply – while we do, request you too to do the same – wishing to have a super-charged engineering environment everywhere!

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend

Please refer to our blog on the 13th June regarding engineering in our country failing to hold all to itself here. Let’s look at the reasons before we try to find a remedy for the situation. The reasons, probably, are:

(i)                  Engineers in our country are, in general, not paid so well as in abroad.

(ii)                Engineers in our country are, in general, not paid so well as those in some of other career options.

(iii)               Engineering education and profession in our country, in general, does not generate the passion and professional attachment required for one to stick to it notwithstanding.

We think, the remedy for the situation lies in:

(i)                  Creating an ecosystem in our country which will attract and support the biggest engineering challenges from all corners of the world.

(ii)                As a precursor to (i), creating an engineering education system consisting of faculty sound in basics and passionate about engineering themselves, and contents which equip the students to be more than ready for the professional challenges and expectations.

Would you mind adding your input to the above to make the remedy to work the best?

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend

Let’s ponder over the first of the factors, cited in the blog yesterday, which come in the way of our garnering the best engineering workforce – Migration of a good portion of the “creamy layer” among our engineering students abroad and to non-engineering career.

Wouldn’t it would be better if all and especially the best of the lot remain committed to engineering for the good of engineering in our country?

An engineering professional, like you, will definitely have a big “YES” for the above!

Let’s look at the possible reasons for a scenario different from what we wish to be in:

(i)                  Engineering in our country, in general, failing to provide a career not so satisfying as in abroad

(ii)                Engineering in our country, in general, failing to provide a career not so satisfying as some of other career options in                             our country

There is, possibly, a third reason that engineering in our country failing to generate the level of “professional attachment” which could make a professional stick “in spite of”.

We need to analyze the above reasons.

We are sure that you are with us – simply because we are with you!

Dear Friend

In order to keep our task simple, let’s worry about one thing at a time. Let’s review the quality of our engineering workforce. It consists of:

(i)                  Pass outs from our numerous engineering colleges

(ii)                Engineering professionals, of different experience levels, working at various organizations

(iii)               Retired very senior folks who have fortunately been noticed and picked up before they are lost in “(i) Worked for a life time. Let me relax now. (ii) There is hardly any energy left., etc.” frame of mind.

Let’s look at the factors which come in the way of our garnering the best engineering workforce:

(i)                  Migration of a good portion of the “creamy layer” among our engineering students abroad and to non-engineering career

(ii)                Lack of the competent faculty to “seed” right basics and attitude

(iii)               Job hopping due to organizations failing to retain professionals for various reasons

(iv)              Lack of challenging assignments to keep the “brains” stretching themselves for ever

(v)                Most of the retired very senior folks “being lost” in terms of their productive years for various reasons

What we have shared above are just a few thought provokers…Since we are not wiser than you, and have only a tiny speck of the total wisdom that you have as a joint entity…Let’s wait for your input in all our earnestness reminding you once that it’s a mission that we have embarked upon together, and, therefore, it’s our shared responsibility to exercise our brains untiringly till we both resolve the issues and implement measures to ensure that we remain “better off” with the time passing by…

Dear Friend

You could be truly and terribly busy with real execution of tasks… Notwithstanding, we know for sure, there are waves eroding and redefining the boundaries of our assumed existence and making us more than conscious of the elements that we are not at ease with. We could simply alter them if we “could”…Isn’t it so? Somehow we seem to entertain a different belief…

We’ll change things for the better – both you and us…on our mission to enable our country find its due place, considering that it has GIANTS like you, in the engineering landscape!

Well, don’t you feel that the answer to each of the questions posed in the earlier message a big “YES”? We need to delve deep into the details to be able to identify a clear list of action items for us – you and us. Let’s do it.

Respectfully yours,

Dear Friend

Moving forward, let’s introspect where we fall short when compared to our competition…

(i)                  Is it on the quality of engineering resources?

(ii)                Is it on the engineering processes?

(iii)               Is it on the engineering infrastructure?

We would be keen to hear you out on your thoughts and input from your valuable experience of being in this domain….
